The situation due to the Corona crisis was similar for the three large ministries surrounding the Protestant Reformed Church. Closed churches, missing collections, cancelled events: Contributions from the church sector tended to decline. On the other hand, support from private donors and foundations increased.
However, the article by Kirchenbote editor-in-chief Tilmann Zuber also mentions that Mission 21 was pleased about imaginative church congregations or bazaar groups. For many groups reacted creatively to restrictions. A "soup to go" was offered instead of the traditional soup day. Church congregations sold braids or Advent wreaths in certain time slots instead of setting up a bazaar.
Help urgent - also in the longer term
The fact that aid is urgently needed and will probably remain necessary for a long time is shown by an example from Peru. The lockdown is causing poverty to rise because many people have lost their jobs and have no financial reserves.
On the one hand, this prolonged emergency in many countries of the global South increases the need for aid and support for Mission 21 and the other agencies. On the other hand, the situation could now become more difficult. This is because the churches are expecting declining tax revenues. As a result, contributions to the ministries are also likely to be lower. Mission 21 would like to thank all those who nevertheless show solidarity and make increased contributions to alleviate poverty and need.
