EYN, Church of the Brethren
The EYN evolved from the missionary work of the USA-based Church of the Brethren which began in 1923. It is most widespread in the north-east of Nigeria, a region of rural character. From there, it has increasingly expanded its sphere of influence to include the country's major cities as well. Nigeria has been afflicted by a severe and sustained economic crisis since the mid-1980s. Given this background, adequate state assistance is lacking in many areas – not least healthcare and education. The EYN has therefore become an important element of Nigeria's social system. Terrorism perpetrated by Boko Haram forced it to move its headquarters temporarily to the city of Jos. At the end of August 2016, the headquarters could be moved back to Kwarhi, from where the EYN continues to coordinate its committed efforts for peace and development.
