CIC, Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee

The Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee (CIC) collaborates with Labour Action China (LAC), an independent non-government organisation, to champion the rights of workers in south China suffering from silicosis and conditions caused by exposure to benzene. Since 2011, the CIC has awarded scholarships to enable children of silicosis victims to receive school education. With financial support from Mission 21, the CIC launched a new project in 2015 that offers an alternative source of income to people affected by silicosis, with the aim of helping them to set up their own businesses. To achieve this, the CIC assists them by granting interest-free loans and also through counselling and visits on a quarterly basis. Thanks to these measures, the individuals concerned slowly regain their sense of self-worth and their self-confidence, and they are reintegrated into society. The CIC has been registered as an independent charitable organisation since 2009.
