They see education as an effective key to a better future. Mission 21 supports both partner churches and the theology department of a university so that marginalized population groups receive fair educational opportunities and are given ways out of poverty.
A major challenge for Tanzanian society is the high prevalence of HIV. Mission 21 and its Tanzanian partner churches are particularly committed to helping orphans whose parents have died of AIDS. They are able to complete comprehensive schooling and vocational training and have access to medical care and psychosocial support. People with disabilities are also particularly affected by exclusion and poverty. Mission 21's program supports them with therapeutic services, promotes their economic independence and fights against exclusion.

Program Goals

Inclusive education as a way out of poverty
The focus is on education, health and the promotion of income for particularly vulnerable population groups in remote regions. A particular focus is on the inclusion of people with disabilities. With the support of Mission 21, the churches run several vocational schools. One
Solid education for all is the key to a better future for the young generation in Tanzania and enables a way out of poverty, which still affects the majority of people in Tanzania.

Support for disadvantaged children and young people
Mission 21 supports its partner churches in providing particularly disadvantaged groups with better educational opportunities. For example, there is an extensive program to support orphans. Children and young people with disabilities receive increased support. For example, they are given the opportunity to receive vocational training.

Protecting the climate, empowering women
The consequences of global warming are threatening the people of Tanzania, whose main source of income is usually agriculture. Extreme weather conditions are on the increase, with droughts, heavy rainfall and flooding jeopardizing harvests and often people's only income. Mission 21 supports women's groups in the particularly affected Mbarali district. Together they create gardens and tree nurseries in which particularly heat-resistant plants and trees are grown and later planted. This counteracts soil erosion and improves the microclimate. Additional well drillings not only ensure the irrigation of the new plantations, but also supply the local people with clean drinking water.

Projects of the cooperation program

Agriculture and securing livelihoods

186.1505 Protect climate, empower women, sustainable agriculture

Education

186.1504: Education for social change in Tanzania

186.1509: Future for disadvantaged children and young people in Tanzania

186.1503: Inclusive vocational training for young people in Tanzania

Health

186.1508: Inclusive health services in Tanzania

Capacity Development for Good Governance

186.1005: Strong civil society for sustainable development in Tanzaniaa

On site

Adrienne Sweetman

Anthropologist and health expert Adrienne Sweetman has headed Mission 21's coordination office in Tanzania since January 2019.
