Background information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In rural Tanzania, poor infrastructure poses a barrier to access to health care. Distances are long, and the effects of climate change are exacerbating the deterioration of transportation infrastructure. High poverty rates mean that a large portion of the population cannot afford either the transportation costs to distant facilities or health insurance. The burden of providing health care falls disproportionately on women. They are largely responsible for caring for the elderly, children, and the sick. For people with disabilities, health care is virtually nonexistent, and there is little awareness of their rights and needs. Stigmatization against them remains high. Only a few organizations support and advocate for people with disabilities. Persistently high HIV rates in the southern highlands of Tanzania, combined with noncommunicable diseases (diabetes, heart disease, cancer), have led to a high number of people living with chronic illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall Objectives:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Health care for marginalized and particularly vulnerable population groups in the southern highlands of Tanzania is improved through community-based prevention and rehabilitation measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      • Training in the areas of health prevention, domestic violence, non-communicable diseases or income generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n
