Se fund\u00f3 en 1958 e inicialmente se centr\u00f3 en la investigaci\u00f3n de las religiones japonesas y el cristianismo japon\u00e9s. En a\u00f1os posteriores, se a\u00f1adi\u00f3 el di\u00e1logo interreligioso con representantes de estas religiones. Mission 21 est\u00e1 comprometida con el di\u00e1logo entre religiones en muchos lugares y, por tanto, tambi\u00e9n apoya el correspondiente programa de intercambio del Instituto. Permite a los estudiantes de teolog\u00eda, estudios religiosos, estudios japoneses y educaci\u00f3n religiosa ampliar sus conocimientos especializados en Jap\u00f3n y adquirir competencia interreligiosa en el contexto de otras religiones.
