Esta organizaci\u00f3n no gubernamental se fund\u00f3 en el a\u00f1o 2000 en Cirebon, Java Occidental, poco despu\u00e9s de la ca\u00edda del r\u00e9gimen de Suharto en 1998. Desde su fundaci\u00f3n, el Instituto Fahmina se ha convertido en un importante centro para el Islam progresista en Asia. En la educaci\u00f3n, la investigaci\u00f3n y el trabajo en proyectos sociales, se abordan cuestiones como la justicia de g\u00e9nero, la pobreza, el pluralismo religioso y la participaci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica. En la b\u00fasqueda de respuestas a los problemas sociales actuales, el Instituto Fahmina ofrece alternativas a los movimientos religiosos radicales.
