L'organisation non gouvernementale a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e en 2000 \u00e0 Cirebon dans l'ouest de Java, peu apr\u00e8s la chute du r\u00e9gime de Suharto en 1998. Depuis sa cr\u00e9ation, le Fahmina Institute est devenu un centre important pour un islam progressiste en Asie. L'\u00e9ducation, la recherche et les projets sociaux abordent des th\u00e8mes tels que l'\u00e9galit\u00e9 des sexes, la pauvret\u00e9, le pluralisme religieux et la participation politique. Dans sa recherche de r\u00e9ponses aux questions sociales actuelles, l'institut Fahmina propose des alternatives aux mouvements religieux radicaux.
