Tobias Brandner in the "Republic" about the privilege of private space in Corona times

The measures against Covid-19 have also led to fewer planes flying and people staying at home in Hong Kong. This also has its advantages, you can hear the birds chirping and people are quite accessible, writes Tobias Brandner.

Prison as a metaphor
As a prison chaplain, Tobias Brandner is familiar with thoughts on freedom and imprisonment. Now an entire society is experiencing what it means to have to give up a large part of personal freedom.

The home is becoming a new area of conflict. This affects even more than before the many female migrant workers in Hong Kong who work as domestic helpers. These approximately 300,000 young women (half of whom come from Indonesia) have to live as domestic workers in close quarters with their employers. Very few of them have a room of their own; many sleep on simple mats or even in the beds with the children they look after during the day.

Restricted free time - restricted project work
In the Corona pandemic, the lives of these women are even more restricted. Before the crisis, many domestic workers used to meet and exchange ideas in the parks during their free time. Mission 21, with its partner organization Christian Action, is committed to helping domestic workers who have been affected by violence or exploitation. The meetings in the park were a good opportunity to give them important information about their rights and a contact in case of emergency. This is now no longer allowed. Reaching the women is therefore more difficult and costly at the moment.
