In South Sudan, pregnancy and childbirth are among the greatest health risks for women. The health care system has been severely weakened by decades of crisis, and outside of major urban centers, there is a shortage of qualified health care professionals in many areas. Pregnant women often have to walk for days just to reach a medical facility.
Together with local partner organizations, Mission 21 is committed to providing reliable and high-quality health care. At the midwifery school in Juba, which opened in 2023, aspiring midwives complete a comprehensive three-year diploma program. They acquire comprehensive medical expertise, learn to recognize complications early on, and assist with births safely and empathetically. Supplementary modules on peacebuilding and trauma sensitivity strengthen cooperation across ethnic boundaries.
