The birth of a child is a special event. However, conditions surrounding pregnancy and childbirth vary greatly around the world. While birth rates are declining in some countries, they remain high in others, and in still others, infant and maternal mortality rates are very high. The Münster conference «The Beginnings of Life—Childbirth in a Changing World,» organized by Haus zum Dolder in cooperation with Mission 21, explores childbirth from various angles and also offers global perspectives.
In South Sudan, mothers and newborns face significant health risks. The midwifery school in Juba, supported by Mission 21, trains professionals to provide care for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. In this way, the training helps improve health care and save lives. Dorina Waldmeyer, Africa Team Leader at Mission 21, will speak at the conference about the midwifery school in South Sudan and its significance for the local population. She will highlight the importance of qualified obstetric care and how education can bring about tangible change.
Additional conference papers from the fields of social anthropology and obstetrics shed light on global trends and diverse realities of life.
