The attack on Friday was carried out with nine pickup trucks and several motorcycles, according to reports from various sources. The militiamen entered the small town, shooting and causing great destruction. In particular, the main EYN church in Garkida was severely damaged. Vehicles belonging to the agricultural program were also damaged, as well as stores and private residences. There is no confirmed information on casualties among the population so far.
Some of the residents were able to flee into the bush. They only returned to their village after the military had driven out the Boko Haram fighters.
Important community for the church of the brothers and sisters
Garkida is located just 60 kilometers from the headquarters of the Church of the Brethren. It is one of the oldest congregations of the Church and particularly important for its history. The first missionaries of the Church of the Brethren began their work there as early as 1923. In the first years, they established a medical care station, an elementary school and a care station for lepers. This was followed in 1932 by a training center for teachers.
